August 1953 – A fire started in the Chocolate Shoppe on Main Street and spread to the adjacent jewelry store and law office of Fitzgerald & Taylor at 61 Main Street. Only the wills protected by the office’s fire-proof safes and three (3) one (1) dollar bills survived the fire. Fitzgerald & Taylor thereafter moved their office to 15 Court Street on the second floor of the Cortland Laundry building.
